Since the beginning of times man has always wished to fly and fly high. When the Wright brothers flew
for the very first time, little did people know that this would mark as the initiation of a very long journey,
in fact a never ending journey, in the field of aviation.
1. Boeing 747
Also known as the jumbo jet, the Boeing 747 has been the most successful plane of all time. It is the
very first wide body aircraft and is available in both versions, that is commercial and cargo. Its unique
shape makes it easily recognizable. It has a partial double deck structure. It has four engines and it held
the record of highest passenger capacity for over 35 years. It was first flown commercially in the 1970s
and up till now its variants are in production, with the Boeing 747-8 as the latest of all and the longest
commercial airplane to date. To date it has sold more than 1400 units.
2. Boeing 777
It is the largest twin jet engine, manufactured by the Boeing Company in the late 90s. The plane has a
capacity of over 300 passengers and has the ability to fly the longest distance without refueling. It has
a range of about 5500 to 9000 nautical miles, depending upon its models, and is the first fly by wire
aircraft of Boeing Company. Its variant the 777-200LR is regarded as the longest range aircraft on planet
and has the record of flying continuous for the longest distance ever by any aircraft in the world.
3. Concorde
This plane is regarded as an engineering exception and marvel. It was jointly developed by the French
and British government. It was the only supersonic commercial aircraft and served the industry for more
than 25 years before it was grounded due to factors related to pollution. The plane used to fly between
New York, London and Paris at a record speed. Only 20 units were built and it was retired after its only
accident on November 26th 2003.
4. Airbus A-380
The Airbus A380 is the world’s largest commercial plane with a capacity of up to 800 people. It is a
four engine, wide body, twin aisle aircraft which came into operation in October 2007. It is a double
decker aircraft which has been developed by the Airbus Company to end the monopoly of Boeing in the
manufacturing of wide body aircrafts.
5. Airbus A-320
This plane is regarded as the most sold aircraft of all times. The A320 has been developed by the Airbus
Company. It is a narrow body twin jet engine aircraft used for short to medium distance. A total of more
than 4500 units have been sold since the start of its production.
